About the Amsterdam Public Libary

The Amsterdam Public Library is a cultural establishment whose aim is the promotion of the free passage of information within the community of Amsterdam.

In addition we provide a centre for meeting and education for all sections of the population. This generates many cultural and promotional activities designed to stimulate and propagate an interest in reading, education and the transfer of knowledge and culture.

Electronic information transfer is developing apace alongside the more traditional aural and written methods. Nationally the Amsterdam Public Library takes a pioneering role in this.

The organisation comprises a central library and 27 branch libraries. Together they provide a library service for the boroughs of Amsterdam, Diemen and Ouder Amstel. The library has 330 employees and an annual budget of 20 million euros.

With 3.5 million visitors per year the library is the most frequently visited cultural establishment in Amsterdam. Preparations are currently underway for the new central city library on the Oosterdokseiland.
