Read aloud

BrowseAloud is a reader's assistant that makes websites more user-friendly and easier to understand. When the cursor is placed over the text, the text is read out loud and displayed in a parallel, two-colour cursor or in an enlarging window. This enables members and users of the Amsterdam Public Library with a visual impairment or language difficulties to use the information on the website more effectively. The reader's assistant can be installed via the website using a free download programme.

All that is necessary to use the programme is a one-time installation of a small programme on your PC or laptop. The programme is between 5 and 7 MB in size. You can find the link to the download at the bottom of this page.

The link will take you a website with more information on using this function. After reading the information, you can install the reader's assistant using the free plug-in. You will only need to download and install the plug-in once. The function can be used on all sites that offer BrowseAloud.

Useful and necessary
The reader's assistant helps people with language difficulties, dyslexia, different mother tongue or a visual impairment to make more effective use of the information on any site that offers the service. The added visual and aural support therefore increases the independence of these users.

You can change the settings of your reader's assistant by right clicking on the little icon on your PC or laptop; here you can change the voice into an English one [if your defaultvoice is Dutch].

The following websites offer the service:
