OBA for Ukraine

On 24 February 2022, Russia began a military invasion of Ukraine. Many Ukrainians have fled their homes and came to Amsterdam. The OBA wants to welcome all Ukrainians in the libraries across Amsterdam and offer the children some distraction.


In the following branches Ukrainian and Russion (childrens) books will be added tot he collection:    

  • OBA Oosterdok       
  • OBA Mercatorplein      
  • OBA Javaplein      
  • OBA Bijlmerplein        
  • OBA CC Amstel

The OBA offers:

  • Free membership for Ukrainians up to 19 years old. This will give access tot all books and the online collection. The smallest kids upto 2 years old will get a free baby-starterkit (BookStart) with a 2 small childrens books.   
  • OBA employees are available to answer questions and for advise.      
  • The OBA membership can be applied for an in at the service desk in all OBA branches or through customer service  (call 020-5230900 or send an e-mail to klantenservice@oba.nl)
  • Free activities such as reading sessions, language lessons etc.        
  • In a few Makerspaces (maakplaatsen) special classes will be organised in April/May. More information will follow.      
  • Parents can use free wifi, computers and charging points.

Workshops for children in the May holiday

In a few OBA branches we organise free workshops making robots or print t-shirts. This is for children age 8-12 and with the guidance of a workshop coach and a translator. You are welcome to join your child to watch. You can register your child for free via the link below.

Initiatieves for Ukraine

  • The BookaBooka picturebook-app has made a large part of their library availble for kids from the Ukraine. BookaBooka is looking for people that can translate picturebooks from Dutch, English, Fench, Spanish and Czech to Ukrianian. More information
  • De Wackers Academie is organising free paining workshops for Ukrianian children. These workshops are being run by professional artists with experience with working with kids.                 More information
